White Paper: Fire risk management for lithium-ion batteries in data centers

Lithium-ion batteries, with their high energy density and longevity, are gradually replacing lead-acid batteries to secure the power supply of data centers. Despite their high performance, these batteries present the rare risk of thermal runaway. The resulting fires are difficult to control and require special expertise to extinguish.

This white paper, written by experts from APL Data Center, BCFI, Huawei Digital Power France and Exide Technologies, has a dual objective: to share real-life feedback and to offer a summary of current best practices for anticipating and controlling the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.

It details:

  • The causes that can lead lithium-ion batteries to catch fire;
  • The design, operating and maintenance rules to be respected to limit the risks of fire and fire propagation: best practices, regulations and standards;
  • Which detection and extinguishing systems are suitable for lithium-ion batteries;
  • How to establish an effective protocol in the event of fire.

This white paper is intended in particular for:

  • Engineering firms specializing in infrastructure design,
  • Data center operators, ensuring service availability,
  • Energy solution integrators,
  • Technical managers in charge of maintenance and safety.
