Case studies: Understanding the environmental impacts of ICT and taking action
The members of NegaOctet (DDemain, GreenIT.fr, Bureau Veritas LCIE CODDE Department and APL Data Center) have been mandated by the European Green/EFA parliamentary group to conduct case studies on the environmental impacts of digital technologies.
The aim of this study is to make the understanding of the environmental impacts of digital technology accessible to a large audience and to enable a broader public to become familiar with the scientific method of life cycle assessment.
In order to facilitate a global understanding of current and future issues, eight case studies have been selected along two axes, and environmental:
Technological case studies:
- The Internet of Things (IoT) and connected objects
- Artificial intelligence
- Cloud
- 5G
- Autonomous vehicles
Environmental effects case studies:
- Rebound effects
- Raw materials
- E-waste & circular economy
For each case study, the following points are developed: summary, definition, main concepts, examples of use cases, environmental issues and recommendations to reduce the environmental impact of digital services.
